Thankful by Eileen Spinelli illustrated by Archie Preston is a new picture book for children that would make a perfect story for Thanksgiving time. The cover depicts a simple cartoon of a fall scene with children playing in the leaves. The abstract, non distinct cartoon leave much to the imagination. The two playful children are not obviously human as they resemble cute little critters. Upon closer scrutiny, the reader sees these are in fact human children and not personified animals with personalities.
The story is unexpected in its multiple meanings. Without the illustrations, the words would take on an entirely new meaning, Yet the illustrations depict these children in adult roles and scenarios as if they are play acting. This book will be certain to encourage children to use their imaginations when role playing. Yet on a deeper level, even the adults and parents will read this book and realize that they too take some blessings for granted, In the end both parents and children alike will close this picture book feeling a little more appreciative and thankful for the ordinary aspects of life that are often overlooked.
